An election to formalize the union of six hundred New York Times tech workers begins today as the National Labor Relations Board begins sending out ballots. It is a historic milestone in a campaign where workers have fought for recognition since first announcing that they had formed a union last April. Ballots will be counted between February 28 and March 7.

Sports Illustrated Union, which represents 94 workers across the sports publication, has voted unanimously to ratify their contract with Sports Illustrated management and The Arena Group. The deal was finalized on December 31, 2021 and ratified Thursday, January 20, 2022. The deal includes a transformative policy on metric-based quotas, huge improvements to diversity, equity, and inclusion standards in the workplace, and an equitable severance policy, among other things.

In a long-awaited decision, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) today ruled that New York Times tech workers can hold a vote on unionization starting later this month as one united bargaining unit. It marks a major victory for tech workers at the Times, who first announced the formation of their union in April and have met resistance from the Times at every step, including an attempt in August to divide the group into separate job-specific units and disenfranchise dozens of voters.

The Guild is pleased to announce that our new Local Chair is Jody Godoy of Reuters. Godoy is a legal reporter at Reuters who has served on the Guild’s Executive Committee since 2018. She previously worked at Law360, where she was a member of the bargaining committee that secured the shop’s first contract.

While the pandemic rages on, we’ve said no to austerity measures and to a people-over-profits stance at our bargaining tables. We stood firm on our demands for true equity, diversity, and inclusion in our newsrooms. We drew a hard line on health and safety standards in the workplace. We strengthened our community with overarching solidarity. 

Above all else, we made a commitment to each other to build a union that deeply reflects our values. That commitment to action has made all the difference in the world.

Workers at Wirecutter announced today they have reached a deal with the New York Times on their first contract. This represents a major milestone for the Wirecutter Union after negotiations came to a head last month, when Wirecutter staff went on strike during Black Friday through Cyber Monday, the site’s most profitable days of the year.

TIME Union will rally outside of the company’s Manhattan headquarters on the corner of 42nd St. and 6th Ave. to spread the word about their grueling fight for a fair contract, letting management know their demands: commit to fair pay, job security, and quality journalism.

The Labor Board formally issued a complaint over union-busting by Gannett at the Atlantic Digital Optimization Team (DOT) on November 23, 2021. The Board complaint outlines that the company engaged in an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP).

The Buzzfeed News Union workers are walking off the job for one day starting this morning with 100% participation. At the same time, BuzzFeed shareholders are set to vote to take the company public. Workers are calling on management to focus less on growing the company economically, and more on their employees, who have been fighting for two years to reach a fair union contract with adequate pay raises, affordable health care, a sensible outside work policy, and reasonable discipline standards.
