NEW YORK –  Unionized journalists at the Daily News have reached a tentative agreement with the paper’s owner, Alden Global Capital, for a first contract that includes new, life-changing salary minimums, 6% wage increases over six months and new benefits for part-timers. 

The bedrock of democracy is a free press, which includes the right of reporters to ask questions of and report on the government, including law enforcement officials.

Following Israel’s killing of five journalists in Gaza on Aug. 25, the NewsGuild of New York again condemns in the strongest possible terms the continued killing, harassment and intimidation of journalists in Gaza covering the Israel-Hamas war, and calls for an immediate halt to these practices.

NEW YORK – City Councilwoman Carmen De La Rosa will introduce a resolution calling out the destructive practices of Daily News owner Alden Global Capital and strongly urging the predatory hedge fund to reach a contract deal with the newspaper’s union.

Now, 130 former Daily News journalists have signed onto a petition, calling for management at the Daily News and execs at predatory hedge fund owner Alden Global Capital to recognize the current staff’s value and agree to a fair contract. 

We were notified that Business Insider management intends to lay off about 20 percent of our members as part of their ongoing “strategy” to “build toward something new.”

Let’s be clear: This is far from anything new. This is the third round of layoffs in as many years and it is unacceptable that union members and other talented coworkers are again paying the price for the strategic failures of Business Insider’s leadership.

NEW YORK – Unionized journalists at two Gannett newspapers in New York have ratified a two-year collective bargaining agreement that will correct long-standing wage stagnation, set salary minimums for the first time and improve time off and job security.

NEW YORK – Journalists at three newspapers in New Jersey represented by The NewsGuild of New York, have voted 98% to ratify their first contract with Gannett, lifting long-stagnant wages by over 25% on average, and averting a planned walkout.

NEW YORK –  Editorial workers at CNET and ZDNet are joining The NewsGuild of New York as members of the Ziff Davis Creators Guild (ZDCG).

Late last year, Ziff Davis acquired both websites, which cover technology, reviews and beyond. CNET and ZDNet workers will be covered under ZDCG’s current contract, ratified last summer. Under the site’s former owner, Red Ventures, CNET content creators previously unionized as the CNET Media Workers Union affiliated with the Writers Guild of America East.

NEW YORK – Journalists represented by The NewsGuild of New York at six of Gannett’s largest papers in New Jersey and New York have reached tentative contract agreements with life-changing increases in pay and job protections, ending three years of contentious bargaining. 

NEW YORK – Unionized editorial staff at New York Magazine have reached a tentative agreement with the magazine and parent company Vox Media that includes double digit wage increases over the life of the contract, addresses serious health care and living costs, and protects members’ rights if the company decides to use artificial intelligence. The tentative agreement allows the company to avert a comprehensive work stoppage by members if a deal was not reached.

NEW YORK – The unionized workers of New York Magazine, represented by The NewsGuild of New York, have informed management that they are prepared to walk off the job unless they get a fair contract, including strong AI protections.

NEW YORK - The editorial and publishing staff of The New Republic have ratified a new three-year contract with the magazine, which includes strong no-layoff protections on AI, a more than $20,000 increase in the salary floor and an average of a nearly 20% raise for members over the life of the contract.
