LOCAL BULLETIN - While attending church on Christmas Day, Guild member Robert Janiec of WPIX-TV and his family lost their home to a fire that also claimed the life of their pet dog. LOCAL BULLETIN - The list of on-the-job hazards for reporters got a little longer last week. Besides death, kidnapping, arrest, lawsuits and subpoenas to worry about, journalists now risk having Donald Trump make fun of their physical disabilities.  Even more disturbing is Trump's claim that he didn't do what we saw him do. Journalists need to hold Trump and others accountable to the truth.

AL JAZEERA - UPDATE: Management at the first digital media outlet to force a government-supervised election instead of voluntarily recognizing the union, has stated they will no longer oppose the inclusion of nine news editors in the newly-formed unit. NewsGuild president Peter Szekely responds.

AL JAZEERA - An overwhelming majority of the digital newsroom of Al Jazeera America has signed onto the effort to unionize with The NewsGuild of New York. The group has called on AJAM’s management to voluntarily recognize their union. They are still awaiting a formal response from the company.

LOCAL BULLETIN - NewsGuild of New York President Bill O'Meara announced  this week that he will retire on Aug. 31 “for health and personal reasons,” after 27 years working at the Local, including the last eight years as its leader. O'Meara will be succeeded for the remaining 16 months of his three-year term by the Local's No. 2 officer, Secretary-Treasurer Peter Szekely.

Writers and staff members of The Guardian US announced Wednesday that they voted 45-0 to join The NewsGuild-CWA, through an expedited election agreed to by The Guardian’s management and staff. The announcement is the latest in a series of organizing victories for digital news reporters.

LOCAL BULLETIN - Hudson News Unit Chair Kazi Islam, who has worked tirelessly to build a cohesive community among the retail and fast food workers of his sprawling Manhattan bargaining unit, is the New York Guild’s winner of the Guild’s 2015 Keenan Award. The award will be presented at a meeting open to all Guild members on Monday, June 29 at 6:30 p.m.

LOCAL BULLETIN - The Guild has opened nominations for its annual service award, named in honor of the late Tom Keenan. Each year, the Keenan Award recognizes a Guild member who “has performed above and beyond the call of duty in service to the New York Local, and best exemplifies the ideals of a true labor leader, in the spirit of Tom Keenan.” Nominations, which can be made by any member, are open until Friday, May 22 at 6 p.m. EDT.

LOCAL BULLETIN - Guild members on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved removing “paper” from the name of their 81-year-old union and overhauling its bylaws for the first time in 17 years to streamline its leadership and governing structures. Members voted 407 to 105 to change the Local’s name from the Newspaper Guild of New York to The NewsGuild of New York.

LOCAL BULLETIN - Full scholarship applications for union members and their families pursuing degrees at Empire State College of the State University of New York are now being accepted for the 2015-2016 academic year. Students who receive the scholarship will study online through Empire State College’s Center for Distance Learning.

LOCAL BULLETIN - Sixteen candidates for delegates and alternates – eight each – to the 2015 convention of the Communications Workers of America were nominated on Monday, after the suggestion of a lack of a quorum halted nominations at last week’s Representative Assembly (RA) meeting.

LOCAL BULLETIN - Should the Guild drop “newspaper” from its name? Should we revise our bylaws to streamline our leadership and governing structures? After months of discussion and debate, first by the Guild’s Administrative  Committee and then by the Executive Committee, both bodies recommended a “yes” vote on both questions. Now it is time for all members of the New York Guild to decide these questions in a referendum.

LOCAL BULLETIN - The Guild will hold its annual winter membership meeting on Jan. 27 (UPDATE: Postponed to Feb. 3 due to blizzard) amid a swirl of contract campaigns and a decision by our parent union to change its name. In addition, Guild members are eligible for two separate scholarship programs, and the maximum weekly salary on which dues are assessed will increase on March 1. For the large majority of members, however, there will be no increase in dues.
