UNION REPRESENTATIVE

New York, NY

The NewsGuild of New York, CWA Local 31003, with a membership as diverse as our city, seeks an experienced union representative with bargaining experience ready to hit the ground running to advocate for, communicate with and organize news industry employees in the America’s media capital.

A union representative (aka business agent) is the Local’s ambassador in the workplace, consulting with activists and other Guild members on the one hand, while dealing with management representatives on the other. Besides negotiating contracts, the job involves settling grievances when possible, and preparing for arbitration when not. Communicating with members and building a strong union presence that engages members in every workplace are equally important. Union reps also are likely to be asked to help organize new members.

Most of our contracts are with news organizations. Our diverse membership includes big-name correspondents; an array of newsroom staffers in print, digital and television; immigrant newsstand workers, ESL teachers and advertising sales people. We are building our union into a bigger, more powerful advocate for media workers.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

-  Must have contract bargaining and grievance handling experience.

-  Familiarity with basic labor law.

-  Ability to write clearly and authoritatively for nitpicky professional readers and to convince journalists in the fast-evolving media business that yes, they really do need a union.

Besides union experience, the job requires good judgment, people skills and writing ability. Knowledge of the news business is a valuable plus.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The union representative (i.e., business agent) will join our professional staff at our Times Square office. Competitive salary commensurate with experience. Generous benefits, including full health care and pension plans. Equal Opportunity Employer.

To apply, send cover letter, resume, contact info, three references and any other helpful documents to Secretary-Treasurer Peter Szekely.
