Top editors at Reuters have repeatedly stolen work from unionized staff, NewsGuild of New York says

NEW YORK – Top-level editors at Reuters - including Editor-in-Chief Alessandra Galloni - have repeatedly big-footed unionized journalists by cherry-picking stories, taking bylines and doing reporting and writing instead of managing their staff, all in violation of labor law, the NewsGuild of New York says.

On Monday, July 20, the NewsGuild of New York took legal action against Reuters, filing an Unfair Labor Practice charge (ULP) that accuses management of illegally taking away work from union members and failing to bargain with Reuters Guild first. 

Along with keeping plum assignments for themselves, Reuters managers have also persistently taken primary bylines over bargaining unit members on stories. The Guild has documented more than 250 separate contractual byline violations since 2025. In addition, the company has misclassified several managers who spend a majority of their shifts doing union work, according to the Guild. 

“We want our bosses to know that we take our work very seriously,” said Scott DiSavino, unit chair of Reuters Guild and energy correspondent. “And protecting that work is fundamental to our rights as union members.” 

Reuters Guild, which represents over 300 media workers at the award-winning news organization, has been bargaining a new contract for nearly a year. Their current contract expired on Dec. 27, 2025. 

The ULP is the third such legal action the NewsGuild of NY has taken against Reuters in the last two months. Reuters Guild is a bargaining unit of the NewsGuild of New York. 

The NewsGuild of New York also filed a ULP on June 17 after Reuters management threatened a member and interfered with Reuters Guild’s informational picket lines, which are federally protected. About one month earlier, the NewsGuild of NY filed a ULP after Reuters cut ties with a podcast producer who was part of a Teams chat with other workers expressing concerns about parent company Thomson Reuters’ contracts with ICE and DHS. 

“It’s a new low for Reuters’ bosses,” said Susan DeCarava, NYGuild president. “Instead of working with our members as a team to produce the journalism Reuters readers count on, management is putting themselves and their egos first. Their disrespect for their own staff is emblematic of the fear they have of our members’ power and solidarity. ”
