STATEMENT from The NewsGuild of New York on layoffs at Condé Nast

12/06/2024

NEW YORK – Condé Nast management notified us early Thursday morning about their plans to lay off NewsGuild of New York-represented workers.

As of Friday, the Condé Nast Union is losing 22 members across brands, including Self and Bon Appétit as well as at Condé Nast Entertainment. There have been no layoffs of our members at The New Yorker.

Our Condé Nast unions have strong contracts with language that governs notice and process for layoffs as well as severance amounts. We will be strictly enforcing those contracts to protect the legal rights of our members.

Prior to the layoff announcement, we filed a contract grievance over the use of temporary workers across the brands. Filling vacancies management created through layoffs with temporary workers is an attempt to erode our union and stands to have a long-term impact on the quality of these storied publications.

We will continue the fight against this practice and towards the protection of our members’ work.
