STATEMENT from Insider Union , The NewsGuild of New York and Business Insider UK Union, NUJ

We are outraged by Business Insider management’s decision to lay off more than 20 of our non-Guild coworkers on the Product & Technology team Thursday. These talented coworkers keep our website and app running, ensure we’re working with the best data in the business, assist with our video and subscription strategies, and come up with new, effective ways to highlight the amazing written journalism here. This loss is a gut punch to our culture, company, and reader experience. 

We stand in solidarity with those impacted and demand accountability from company management, starting with CEO Christian Baesler. 

This marks what we believe to be Business Insider’s seventh round of layoffs in four years. However, the multiple rounds of quiet layoffs have created fear and made it hard to know just how many times management has pushed out our talented colleagues.  Management continues to use layoffs as a remedy for poor strategic decisions made in conjunction with Axel Springer’s guidance, which is unacceptable.

We stand in solidarity with our coworkers and will continue to do everything possible to fight for strong  job protections and  fair contracts that recognize the importance of human-led journalism.
