SCHUMER STATEMENT IN SUPPORT OF GANNETT JOURNALISTS
06/05/2023
New York, N.Y. – A long-time advocate for New York’s local news outlets, U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer today released the following statement in support of Gannett journalists:
“I’m proud to stand with the hardworking Gannett journalists in their fight for increased investments in our local newsrooms, which cover communities across New York. These reporters are vital and their work is sewn into the very fabric of our state. Our democracy demands a strong, active and independent local press, not only to inform our conversations and decisions, but to tell the stories that would otherwise be left in darkness, and to hold the powerful to account,” said Senator Schumer. “I visit every one of New York’s 62 counties each year — many of which depend on Gannett newspapers as a critical source for local news — and it breaks my heart to see the decline of these once robust newsrooms. I applaud our local reporters for persisting amid these myriad challenges, and I stand with the Gannett journalists from Rochester to the Hudson Valley and across America in their push to gain the fair benefits and contract they unequivocally deserve. Gannett needs to negotiate in good faith until a fair deal is done."
