Work with us! The Guild is hiring a Local Representative

05/17/2019

The NewsGuild of New York, CWA Local 31003, with a membership as diverse as our city, seeks an experienced Local Representative with bargaining experience ready to represent members working in a rapidly changing media industry. Applicants should be ready to hit the ground running to advocate for, communicate with, and organize news industry employees in America’s media capital.

A Local Representative (aka business agent) is the Local’s ambassador in the workplace, consulting with activists and other Guild members on the one hand, while dealing with management on the other. In addition to negotiating contracts, the job involves settling grievances when possible, and preparing for arbitration when not. Member engagement and communications, and building a strong union presence in the workplace, are equally important aspects of the role. Local reps also are likely to be asked to help organize new members.

Most of our contracts are with news organizations. Our diverse membership includes well-known correspondents; an array of newsroom staffers in print, digital and television; immigrant newsstand workers, ESL teachers and media business employees. We are building our union into a bigger, more powerful advocate for media workers.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience with contract bargaining, campaigns, and grievance handling;
  • Ability to write clearly and authoritatively for media professionals;
  • Familiarity with basic labor law;
  • Understanding of rapidly shifting media landscape, including social media and new media tech

Besides union experience, the job requires good judgment, people skills and writing ability. You should be able to work collaboratively with a highly-motivated staff, as well as be a self-starter, motivated to accomplish tasks and manage your own time. There is a steep learning-curve with our membership; knowledge of the news business and journalism is a valuable plus.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
The Local Representative (i.e., business agent) will join our professional staff at our Times Square office. Competitive salary commensurate with experience. Generous benefits, including full health care and pension plans. Equal Opportunity Employer. Union-represented position.

Women and people of color are strongly encouraged to apply.
