STATEMENT: Daily Beast Union disappointed by dismissal of EIC Tracy Conner, demands answers on newsroom’s direction

‘Despite Ben Sherwood and Joanna Coles’ promises of radical candor, we have been consistently kept in the dark about how our newsroom will function under new leadership, and we demand answers.’

The Daily Beast Union learned this morning in a throwaway line at the end of an email that new management had replaced EIC Tracy Connor. Tracy has contributed years of valuable service to our newsroom, mentored countless young journalists, and organized an untold number of office Secret Santas. Throughout the chaos of these recent, abrupt changes in leadership, she has supported, defended, and shielded the newsroom. The Daily Beast would not be what it is without Tracy’s inimitable talents and years of expertise, and we will miss her dearly. In addition, we are disappointed by the disrespectful treatment that she has received over the past few weeks — and this includes the nature of her dismissal.

Tracy also has been a key member of the company’s team at the bargaining table, a process that we continue to push through following the expiration of our contract at the end of 2023. She recently participated in deliberations over our buyout offer to Guild members, which we negotiated and won in the face of potential illegal layoffs.

The loss of Tracy will irrevocably change our newsroom. Going forward, we insist that new management meet with The Daily Beast Union to offer more clarity as to how these massive changes will affect our day-to-day. This includes not only our editorial expectations, but also the remainder of our long, hard-fought contract renegotiation process. Despite Ben Sherwood and Joanna Coles’ promises of radical candor, we have been consistently kept in the dark about how our newsroom will function under new leadership, and we demand answers.
