Following today’s announcement that New York State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman is proposing the nation’s most comprehensive bill to curb misuse of non-compete agreements, NewsGuild of New York President Peter Szekely issued the following statement:
“Earlier this year we alerted the attorney general’s office to abusive non-compete agreements at Law360, setting off an investigation that led the company to withdraw those agreements for its employees, who we have since come to represent. Now Attorney General Scheiderman’s has taken the next logical step, with a proposal that would bring welcome relief to untold numbers of other workers whose careers are being unfairly stifled by these agreements. The proposed bill is good for workers, good for the economy and deserves bipartisan support in Albany. Other states, as well as the federal government, should follow Attorney General Schneiderman’s lead."
The NewsGuild of New York, Local 31003 of the Communications Workers of America, represents 3,000 journalists and other employees at New York area-based news organizations and other companies, including The New York Times, Law360, Thomson Reuters and Time Inc.
