Announcing our 2019 Keenan Award Winners!

06/20/2019

New York, NY - On June 26, 2019, Stephanie Davis of Consumer Reports, and Leslie Dickstein of TIME Magazine, will be honored with the 2019 Thomas M. Keenan NewsGuild of New York Service Award. This award is presented to Guild members who performed above and beyond in service to the New York Local and best exemplify the ideals of a true labor leader in the spirit of Tom Keenan. The award ceremony will be held during the NewsGuild’s Summer Membership meeting at the union’s headquarters (1500 Broadway #900, New York, NY 10036).

This award season will be the sixth time in the 20-year history of the award that the Guild’s Administrative Committee voted to honor two of its most exemplary activists.

Stephanie is recognized for fostering and cultivating fresh ideas while recruiting new activists to engage with the Consumer Reports membership in preparation of contract talks next year.

Leslie is acknowledged for her steadfast determination in fighting for fairness on behalf of her colleagues while playing a major role in growing TIME Magazine’s membership and organizing its digital employees.

“It has been so inspiring to see Stephanie and Leslie engage, motivate and activate members in their respective shops,” said Grant Glickson, the NewsGuild of New York president. “Tom Keenan would have been proud of their passion and accomplishments.’’

Stephanie, who has worked in marketing and audience development at Consumer Reports for four years, has been credited for energizing a shop that lost a number of veteran activists through buyouts during her time with the company. Stephanie is the chair of the mobilization committee, is a unit council member, and served on the shop’s bargaining committee in the last round of negotiations.

“I am deeply humbled and honored to be selected with Leslie for the Tom Keenan Award,’’ Stephanie said. “I'm fortunate to learn from the leaders in my shop and at the local, and to be among the workers who strive to improve our workplaces every day. I'm grateful for the recognition and I look forward to advancing the goals of the labor movement for journalists and media workers. It's an exciting and important time to be involved.’’

Leslie, a reporter and researcher with Time Inc. since 1990, was recently elected as unit chair of TIME Magazine. She was extolled for her leadership, ability to find creative solutions to complicated issues and tireless energy in answering members’ questions.

“I am grateful and deeply honored to be one of this year's Keenan award recipients,’’ Leslie said. "As we all know, union-building is team effort. I share the award with everyone who helped strengthen TIME's Guild presence, especially Meredith unit chair Dan Neuburger, who, nearly single-handedly, kept our shop afloat until the tide turned.’’

The annual award was established in 1999 to honor Tom Keenan, the longest-serving New York Times unit chair. Keenan was elected to seven terms as Times unit chair, holding that office longer than any other person before joining the Guild’s staff as a Local representative in 1998. He died in December 2000 after a battle with cancer.

Any Guild member in good standing can nominate any other member for the award. The winner is chosen by the New York Guild’s Administrative Committee, which consists of the President, Secretary-Treasurer, Local Chairperson, the Local’s three Vice Presidents and TNG Regional Vice President.
